The Day, Emily Amanda Rockwell Died

Hi Donna,

It is great news that you found Emily’s grave site. I’ve wondered for a lot of years where she really was at. The researcher I talked to a few years ago told me he was pretty sure she was in the SLC cemetery, but he couldn’t prove it either. What I remember from Uncle Oren’s story was, and don’t know if he really remembered it correctly, or heard it from someone, but anyway, he say’s he was a small child when Emily was around. They called her crazy woman Tyrell. I have no idea why, but the kids of the time must have perceived her that way for some reason. Anyway, he said Crazy woman Tyrell would walk from her ranch in Etna, to Grouse Creek once a week for supplies. She apparently had a specific schedule or day that she did this. He said she would come to the store, and post office, and then walk the trip back home again the same day. It’s probably 6+ miles each way. For an old lady, that must have been a tremendous undertaking each week. But anyway, one week she didn’t show up as usual, and some in the community decided to ride over and check on her a couple of day’s later. Uncle Oren went along in the wagon for some reason. He say’s they found her in bed and she had died. I have no idea what from, maybe your death certificate will tell. He said he remembered watching the men dig a grave and burying her. He obviously remembered it wrong, or else they dug her up a while later and moved her to SLC? I don’t know. Uncle Winfred Kimber told me he remembered them taking her to Lucin, Utah and putting her on the train. He didn’t remember anything else about her. It just seemed odd to him to take a body to the train and ship her away, so it stuck in his memory. He was a little older than Uncle Oren. I wish those old guy’s were around to quiz about those day’s again. Somehow it just wasn’t important when I was a kid. Uncle Winfred said he remembered his folks talking about the time when Porter Rockwell came out to visit his daughter once. It was quite a talk of the town I guess.
