Emily Amanda Rockwell’s Grave
For some time there has been a mystery as to where Emily was buried. It seemed to be the consensus that she died and was buried in Grouse Creek, Utah. Lillian Idella Lee Wilcox was working on the family history and when she died in 2001 she left all the family history with her daughter Arlene Wilcox Hepworth. I am that daughter. For the last three years I have been sorting and filing and putting into books all the family history that my mother left.
Donna Brizzee Ford is a descendent of Henry Willard Brizzee, husband of Emily Amanda Rockwell. Donna comes through Ann Long Didsbury, another wife of Henry Willard Brizzee. Donna has been meticulously searching the information on Henry Willard Brizzee and his wives. Donna contacted me in 2005. We have emailed each other for information and support.
In September of 2005 Donna contacted me and told me that she was going to Grouse Creek to find the grave of Emily Amanda Rockwell. In the back of my mind I remembered a death certificate for Emily Amanda Rockwell. I looked at the certificate and could see that Emily had died in Grouse Creek, but had been buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. I told Donna and she contacted Robyn at the cemetery office. Robyn did some good investigative work and found Emily’s grave.
On October 10, 2005, a beautiful autumn morning, with the sun shinning and the breeze gently moving the brightly colored leaves, Donna Brizzee Ford, Arlene Wilcox Hepworth and Gaylon Arlo Lee and his wife, Connie, went to the Salt Lake Cemetery and one of the cemetery workers located Emily Amanda Rockwell’s grave. It was to the right side of the grave of her father, Orrin Porter Rockwell. What a thrill it was to be there and to find that she had been laid to rest by the side of her beloved father. What a thrill it was to have found her grave after many years of searching.
There was no marker for Emily’s grave. We were so thrilled to find it, but saddened that such a great ancestor had no marker. All these years we have been looking in the wrong place. We left a temporary marker for Emily’s grave. We felt that Emily Amanda Rockwell needed a proper marker for her grave.
After visiting the grave we all went to the Salt Lake Monument L.L.C. and picked out a headstone for Emily’s grave. With contributions from many people there will be a headstone for Emily’s grave. It will be placed on her grave in the spring of 2006.
